\u00a0 The IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, where defense ministers from the Asia-Pacific region exchange views, was held in Singapore from May 30 to June 1.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 During the meeting, President Makron of France delivered a speech in which he pointed out the importance of European-Asian cooperation on security issues. Also, U.S. Secretary of Defense Hegseth and other dignitaries from various countries delivered speeches.
\n\u00a0 In his speech, Secretary Hegseth repeatedly accused China of trying to fundamentally change the status quo in the region and pointed out that "China’s attempt to suppress Taiwan by force would have devastating consequences for the Indo-Pacific region and the world as a whole\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u00a0 Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani made a speech in which he emphasized the importance of defense cooperation among Indo-Pacific countries and laid out a new cooperative framework.
\n\u00a0 \u201cThe rules-based international order is rapidly being hollowed out,\u201d Minister Nakatani said. He expressed concern that \u201crapid military buildups, including of nuclear weapons, and provocative military actions are on the rise\u201d and said that such moves are \u201clarge obstacles inmaintaining a trustful relationship in security.\u201d
\n\u00a0 On the other hand, He welcomed ASEAN\u2019s expanded role in security, as well as the strengthening of the Japan-U.S. alliance and cooperation between Japan, the United States, Australia and the Philippines, calling such moves \u201cencouraging.\u201d
\n\u00a0 The cooperative framework that he proposed, which calls on the countries with common values and interests to expand their cooperation, is dubbed OCEAN (One Cooperative Effort Among Nations).
\n\u00a0 He said that it is important for \u201cthe defense authorities of those countries to create synergy by strengthening their cooperation.\u201d In accordance with that principle, Minister Nakatani said Japan will deepen its collaboration with ASEAN member countries through such assistance as improving their capabilities and transferring defense equipment to them. Japan, he said, would also deepen defense cooperation within the Japan-U.S.- South Korea and Japan-U.S.-Philippine.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 The special session concerning the cooperative maritime security in the Asia-Pacific was also held, and in this session five speakers gave speeches, including Mr. Seguchi, the Commandant of the Japan Coast Guard.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 At the side tables of the meeting, various talks took place among the participating countries. There was also a meeting of the defense ministers of Japan, the United States and Australia, as well as a meeting of the defense ministers of Japan, the United States, Australia, and the Philippines.
\n\u00a0 According to the joint statement issued after the Japan-U.S.-Australia-Philippines defense ministers’ meeting, the defense ministers \u201cexpressed continued serious concern about China\u2019s destabilizing actions in the East China Sea (ECS) and the South China Sea (SCS) and any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion. They also reiterated their serious concern about dangerous conduct by China in the SCS against the Philippines and other countries, and stressed the importance of the peaceful resolution of disputes.\u201d<\/p>\n
