Profile of Professor Akio Watanabe

Born in Chiba, 1932. March, 1958 graduated from Tokyo University Faculty of Arts, Department of Japanese History and completed a Ph.D in 1967 at Australian National University. From August, 1966, Prof. Watanabe began teaching at Hong Kong University. Since then he has taught at Meiji University in the capacities of Associate Professor and Professor and at Aoyama Gakuin University, Faculty of International Politics and Economics as Professor, specializing in international politics and Japanese diplomacy. He is an Emeritus Professor of both Tokyo University and Aoyama Gakuin University. From February to August 1994, Prof. Watanabe served as a member of the Defense Affairs Roundtable (advisory panel to the Prime Minister) and participated in the compilation of the “The Modality of the Security and Defense Capability of Japan” (the so called Higuchi Report). In April 2000, Prof. Watanabe became President of the Research Institute for Peace and Security.
